Four

I take my time—make my rounds, kibbitz with the Cullens, visit the bar for a glass of port—until the pull is finally too much. Finding an out-of-the-way spot far from the dance floor, I watch. Nobody moves that well without some kind of training, and I can’t wait to find out where he honed his skills.

It’s a booze-loosened crowd, and Dane is joined by a rotating cast of characters—largely the cougar set whose husbands are too lazy or too smart to bust out their moves but are happy to let the harmless gay boy tire out their wives. Enthralled by Dane’s passion and unbridled joy, even more so than the sexy undulations of his body, I fail to hear Edward sneak up next to me.

“He’s not your type.”

“I know. I already told him that.”

Edward regards me with a smirk. “You told him.”

I shrug. “I meant to say hello.”

“Jesus, old man, that was your opening line? Maybe you should hire a pickup mentor.” Edward is far too amused at my discomfort.

“What was your line, hot shot?”

Turning his attention to his bride in the middle of the dance floor, he smiles. “I didn’t have a line per se,” he explains. “I booby-trapped her computer.”

“You romantic fool.” As if on cue, Bella meets Edward’s eye, and that feeling one gets in their presence—that these two were put on this earth to find and love each other—fills me with reverence and awe.

“It seems to be working out so far,” he answers with that smug twinkle that only he can get away with.

Dane spins his current partner away from his body and glances over at me. I shoot him an appreciative smile.

The groom chuckles beside me. “Looks like yours might, too.”

“Who is this boy, Edward?”

Edward steps closer to me and turns his back to the dance floor. “Dane’s a tough nut to crack, Marcus. Not that you’ve ever been one to shy away from a challenge.”

My hands find my trouser pockets as Edward and I share a knowing smile. “He’s a friend of yours?”

“You know Sean’s a social worker, right? He met Dane one night—on the job—about six months ago.”

“Aw, shit. I worried it was something like that when he wouldn’t make eye contact.”

“Yeah, we don’t know much more about him. Getting a word out of the guy is like pulling teeth, and of course, Sean is bound by confidentiality laws.”

Reconciling the victim Edward is describing with the carefree dancer owning the floor is making my head spin. I burn to keep this boy in the light, to erase the abuse he’s suffered and show him what a healthy bond can bring to his life.

And mine.

“Funny,” Edward starts, “I never thought about putting you two together. Now that I see it, of course, it makes perfect sense.”

I allow my gaze to shift from Dane to the friend beside me. Edward’s expression holds exactly what I need: faith, truth, love, and hope. Overcome with emotion, I wrap my arms around the man I’ve loved and desired, allowing myself to let him go—all the way. If I’m not careful, I’ll start sobbing on his shoulder. “Don’t be jealous, Edward. I loved you first.”

He hugs me tighter and kisses me on the cheek. “I know, old man. It’s okay.”

“Have a good life, Edward Cullen.”

I feel him start to shake in my arms.  Soon, he’s laughing so hard, he has to pull away so he can breathe. “How much have you had to drink tonight?”

My fisted hands find my hips. “A bit.”

Recognizing my irritation, he places his hand on my shoulder. “Sorry, it’s just . . . you know we’re coming over on the sixth, right?”

Of course, my wedding present—a day for two in the dungeon. I wasn’t planning on sticking around after letting them in unless there were any post-honeymoon issues either wanted to discuss with me.

“I think I should go upstairs now.”

“Sounds like a good idea,” he says, pulling me into another hug. “I love you, you know.”

“Yeah, I know.”

Surprisingly, I’m the one who pulls away first, giving my friend one last hearty pat on the back before slinking away to my room.

Awww,  wasn't it fun seeing those two together again? I think Marcus just let gofor real this time. Come and tell us what you think! Will Dane email Marcus? Is he too damaged? Will he rub one out? Will Marcus? Will YOU? ;) (You have my permission!)

  2. Ah, sometimes it takes finding someone new to let the old baggage go!

  3. Marcus may need to sleep it off a bit tonight, but I have no doubt the wheels in his head are always turning.

  4. Great moogly boogly. That man. THOSE MEN! Guh. Sappy Marcus is as much fun as goofy Marcus. I adore their relationship and the fact that they're both open about it. It makes me squishy inside.

I love this added layer of complexity to Dane. I can't wait to read more of those two together. The first full sentence Dane gives us is likely to leave me stunned, even if it's just, "Let's try this."

Favorite line...Edward’s expression holds exactly what I need: faith, truth, love, and hope. ..... Made me weepy.

  5. love, love to see Marcus intoxicated by Dane's passion and joy on the dance floor. he has no idea what just hit him!

It IS fun seeing these two together again! Imagining the newly married pair coming over to Marcus's made me envision seeing them through Marcus's eyes. Intriguing idea, I'd love to see more of that or even just Marcus and Edward hanging out (Marcus might need some pointers this time around! haha), but I understand this is Marcus's story with Dane, and if E & B don't factor into that too much, i totally get it. :)

Dying to hear Dane's story. Hope he hasn't been hurt too badly.

favorite line: "I burn to keep this boy in the light, to erase the abuse he’s suffered and show him what a healthy bond can bring to his life." god that is so good. i feel Marcus's yearning as if it were my own.

and right then, something clicks for Marcus, and he's finally over Edward. He says goodbye, like its the end of everything. i guess he can feel his life changing in profound ways and he's just too overcome. I love how edward chuckles at Marcus's reaction. he has to remind the 'old man' that they are still friends, this is not goodbye. lol. i dont know how much of that was alcohol or Marcus just being emotional but it was a very cute way to highlight the bond those two have. I love love love edward kissing him on the cheek, and that you made the point to see that Marcus let go of the hug first.

    1. So much deliciousness in this review. I love the thought you put into each one. Thank you so much. You will definitely see more of Edward and Marcus together. He's one of Marcus's most trusted friends! I guarantee you'll hear Dane's story as well. He's here to tell the tale...I'm so pleased you're enjoying the story on so many levels, Digi. Thank you.

  6. This was an emotional chapter! Marcus letting go of Edward took my breath away. Him seeing the powerful love between E/B opens his eyes to the possibilities doesn't it? Have a feeling this isn't going to be easy, but I am sure it will be fun!

  8. You are a stronger man than I (well, but I'm not any kind of man- period!), Marcus. I would not be so classy as to let Edward go, lol! I'm glad Dane has shown up just in time to help you move past him.

  10. Makes you just want to hug Marcus doesn't? When he is really kind of saying goodbye to Edward? But it is for the best in that now, perhaps, Marcus will be open to a new love interest, right? *wink*

  13. I think Marcus is just the strong but soothing presence this damaged young man needs. I would like to believe that....touching scene what with Marcus letting Edward go. Fitting!

  15. Port Ick. I love that Edward is yanking his chain (so to speak). Was Edward's name on the list? I hope we see that Edward maybe able to help Marcus figure out the dual role thing. Those two together are just so fun. Even Marcus finally moving on is so well played out.

Poor ST. I figured a tragic back story. Marcus maybe just what the Doctor ordered. Matt Smith just popped into my head.

Let's see how high you ramped this.

  16. Awwww. I knew it was coming and still made me sad. Of course Marcus needed to let go of Edward. Edward is completely unavailable to Marcus in so many ways. But just because something needs to be done - doesn't make the doing any easier.

  17. Awwwwh so having missed out on the other stories, it was good to get a glimps into who Marcus and Edward are to each other. The bond between them was evident in the light teasing, the general convo and even the embrace at the end. I love that they make no excuses to let each other know what they mean to each other, even now that Edward is married, they can still do that without it being awkward or uncomfortable. Appreciate that kind of relationship.

Very interesting hearing about Dane's past for a bit. I know we'll get to know more soon. Also excitegd to see how Marcus will approach coaxing Dane out of that shell and how difficult it will be for Dane to just let go and let Marcus take care of them both.

    Ahhhhh... can't stop reading!!!!
