Dear Dane,

Yes, I slept peacefully and I could not be more pleased that you thought of me before rising...or perhaps I brought a new rise?

Warmly,
Marcus
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes, Marcus, keep it light. No need to tell the boy exactly how anxious you are to get your hands on his schedule, to carve out as much time as possible for the two of us to spend together.

And I have to step away from the computer to resist the urge to send back a smiley face. Probably for the best anyway. I have important phone calls to make this morning.

First things first—coffee. Loading up the gold filter with the high octane blend, I start the pot brewing and open the refrigerator for the milk. Columns of perfectly aligned containers arrest the reflexive reach I’ve probably completed well over ten thousand times in my life.

Dane.

A wide smile has crept across my face, and it’s not likely to disappear any time soon. With the mug lined with milk and the rich scent of coffee filling my kitchen, I call a man I used to have on speed dial when I wore a younger dom’s leathers.

It’s been a few months since we’ve spoken, but Aro answers my call personally and swiftly. I wouldn’t exactly characterize his voice as warm, but there’s a certain note of respect and familiarity. “Marcus, it’s been too long. How’s life in the suburbs?”

“I’m good, thanks, and you?”

That bone-chilling hyena laugh crackles through my iPhone. “I’m fine, but somehow I doubt you’re calling me at the crack of the new day to inquire about my health. What can I do for you?”

No nonsense, suits me just fine. “I need to track down an asshole calling himself a dom.”

“And what has this so-called dom done?”

Nearly destroyed a perfectly good boy. “Let’s just say you wouldn’t want him swinging his dick in your dungeon.”

“Wow. That’s not like you, Marcus. This guy must’ve really pissed on the wrong tree.”

The coffeepot beeps behind me. Transferring the phone to my left hand, I fill my mug and take a seat at the counter. I should’ve thought about what I was planning to say before I rattled the lion’s cage, but I’m not exactly operating with all the cards in my deck lately.

“He’s dangerous, and I want him out of circulation.”

Barely a heartbeat passes before Aro answers. “That’s good enough for me. Who is this guy?”

“There’s the trick. All I know is he was with my boy Dane Carmichael up until six months ago though he was likely with others at the same time.”

Thinking about this jerk makes my blood boil, and I’m grateful for the coffee to soothe my nerves.

“Is he a clubber?”

“I don’t know.” God, I sound like an idiot. I know next to nothing about the guy, and I can’t pry without hurting Dane. “I’m sorry, Aro. I shouldn’t have called you.”

“The fact that you did speaks volumes. Let me throw out some cheese and see what kind of rats I can attract.”

My mug settles onto the counter with a rattle, and I let out the breath I’d been holding. “Thank you, Aro.”

“Anytime, Marcus. You know this.”

Yes, I do. As master of a robust, rotating stable of submissives, Aro could never have handled the nuances of training all of them by himself. Though he’s always paid me richly for services rendered, he's never failed to say, “I owe you” each time he collected one of his boys from my dungeon.

He takes my silence as assent.

“Marcus, how’s your boy? Will he be all right?”

A warm shiver passes through me as I recall the heat of Dane’s body in my lap. “I think so. He has a beautiful, unbroken spirit despite everything.”

“And he has you.”

“Yes.” Wrapped around his little finger, but Aro doesn’t need to hear that part.

“Hang tight and I’ll get back to you.”

“Thanks again, Aro. While I have you, how’s Christopher doing?”

Deep sigh on the other end. “He’s still a bit skittish, but we’re getting there. In fact, I was going to give you a ring later today and see when I could get him in.”

Whoops. “This is probably as good a time as any to tell you, I’m taking down my shingle.”

“Wow, really? Have you collared this boy, then?”

Mmm, Dane wearing my collar. Heat spikes in my boxers. “Not yet, but I suspect we are heading in that direction after his trial period is over.”

“Congrats, buddy. I’m happy for you. Of course, I don’t know who I’ll get to take on my problem children . . . but I suppose I’ll manage.”

“Thanks for the guilt trip, buddy.” We’re both smiling now, I can tell. “You know Caius can handle Christopher. You might have to send Adam over to –”

“I was kidding, Marcus,” he chuckles. “Don’t worry about me. It’s all good.”

“I hope the others are as understanding.”

“Make your calls, Marcus. You’ll feel better. Most of us have had a relationship where it just feels wrong to be with anyone else. No one will fault you for that.”

As I tick off each call, I realize Aro is right. My friends are happy for me—jealous, perhaps, but happy.

M
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please let this be good news for him.

My heart takes an air show spin, waiting the impossibly long fraction of a second it takes him to dial.

“What is it, Dane?”

“Hello, M-m—, I have amazing news and I could hardly wait to share it with you!”

He called you first, a thought that upsets me even as it warms my heart. It’s only this moment I realize I know nothing about his family structure or his support system of friends. The fact that he washed ashore in Sean’s shelter tells me heaps about who he trusts. At this point, it seems to be a very small number.

“Let ‘er rip, Dane.” Before you give an old man a stroke. I picture Dane’s fist jabbing at the thought bubble over my head.

“Apparently, the guy who plays Lewis in Pippin broke his foot last night, and our Chad was his understudy before he got the part in Disaster, so the director begged him to come back. Their current understudy is filling in until I can get up to speed to take over the role of Chad! Matt thinks he can have me ready in a week’s time!”

“That’s wonderful news, Dane. I’m so happy for you!”

And so very fucking proud.

His voice changes to barely more than a whisper. “Master?”

“What is it, Dane?” My hackles are up now. What threatens his enthusiasm? I’ll squash it, whatever it is.

“About our time together . . . I’m afraid . . .”

Crap! I’m the threat.  “Don’t worry about that, Dane. We’ll make it work. You let me handle all that.”

His “okay” lacks conviction.

“Do you have a schedule?”

“Yes.”

“Tell me,” I respond, reaching for the pad and pen on my desk.

“I’m on shows and practices through ten p.m. for the next four days running. I’m sorry, Mas—Marcus.”

He needs to stop apologizing, and there’s only one surefire way I know to make him do it. “Dane, if you apologize once more, I will be forced to punish you.” It’s kind of a dick move, but I’m relieved when he gives me another “okay.”

“So you’re on noon to ten through Sunday night?”

“Yes, and then I have Monday off.”

“All right, Dane. I’ll put something together and email your instructions shortly.”

There’s more of a pause than usual before he quietly asks, “If I may . . . I hope this won’t keep us apart another four days?”

“No way, Dane.” As if I’d deprive either of us.

“Okay.” His sigh of relief is so thick, I can practically taste the texture of it through the phone. “Thank you.”

“Listen to me, Dane.” Most useless instruction ever given to a sub like Dane. “I want you to know how proud I am of you. This is a huge deal. You need to bask in it and keep your head. Knock their socks off with those feet of yours.”

“Yeah, well, it’s not just the feet, actually. It’s a fairly large singing and speaking part as well.”

Holy shit. How did this not occur to me sooner? My shy boy is about to take a huge verbal leap in front of an audience of hundreds at a time. Piggybacking on this stark reality—Dane sings.

“How much time will you need to prepare yourself outside of rehearsals?”

“None. I already know the entire score by heart.”

That perfect memory of his. Fuck, will this boy ever cease to impress?

“Excellent. I’ll message you soon. Until then, don’t give away any of your time off.”

“Never. It’s all for you, Master.” Before I can chastise him, he adds, “Don’t worry; I’m alone.”

His reticence draws my chuckle. “I trust you, Dane.”

I can visualize him sweeping his gaze around the room, checking for unwanted ears. “I kind of hate calling you by your name. It feels like I’ve pulled on someone else’s dance shoes.”

The chuckle blooms into full-on laughter, and it deepens when Dane joins me.

“Understood, boy. We’ll find another solution.” Because I am definitely not keeping a treasure like you locked away behind closed doors.  “Work hard, Dane.”

“Always, Master.”

Now that we’ve disconnected, I allow myself an honest, entirely selfish moment of regret. I can’t bring Dane out here to the suburbs so late at night after an exhausting day and expect him to be his best for me or for the show. No, the mountain is going to have to move to Mohammed.

Good morning, Master. i must admit, last night was not my best sleep. i’m afraid all the excitement over the new role and the plans You’ve made for us kept my mind working overtime.

i have packed a bag as You requested and will meet You outside the stage door after tonight’s performance. As i do not eat prior to performing, my body will require a fairly significant quantity of calories when i see You — i felt You would need and want to know.

Thank You, Master.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If it can’t be my dungeon, at least I’ll have a four-poster to work with. In fact, the romantic atmosphere of the Fillmore may just work in our favor if it allows Dane to be more relaxed and loose. Whatever Dane needs.

Ah, yes. Not being the least bit hypocritical there, Marcus, are you? Fine, this is what we both need, I admit as I pack my supplies for the week. There’s nothing stopping me from commuting back and forth, but I’d like to have as many options as possible at my fingertips. The boy has surprised me more than once—in fact, he seems to be making a full-time career of it. When Dane gets in the zone, his walls crumble like so many stale cookies. We’ll be able to leap limits with a single bound.

Accurate, I snicker, tossing the ankle and wrist cuffs into my duffel.

Sadly, it doesn’t take much to close up my house for a week. I drag out the process anyway, not keen on traveling in Manhattan rush hour traffic. Emmaline will come to clean on Monday, and she’ll bring in the mail. There are no mouths depending on me for food. Speaking of food, I toss the remnants of the dishes Dane made into a big cooler bag. The city is filled with temptations I should avoid. Several hours later, I am pulling up to the front of the Fillmore.

The valet is quick to open my door and even quicker to rush me out of my BMW. I exit the car deliberately, standing to my full height and towering over the kid. “Leave the lights on auto, and don’t forget to hit the start button twice to turn it off.”

The kid’s face twists into a condescending sneer. “Don’t worry, sir. I’ve driven this car a few times before.”

“That’s what the last guy said right before he drained my battery.”

As I take the ticket stub, I make it clear I’ll have his ass if he screws up. He doesn't want to find out I’m a master with the bullwhip.

I cross the lobby, pulling my suitcase, piled with the black duffel holding my bondage equipment and a few other toys I’m hoping to use in the near future. Taking possession of the single key and refusing any help with the bags, I am off to find my “executive suite.”

Organizing my supplies in the dungeon is second nature, but anything that might feel rote is given a fresh twist because this is a hotel room and, frankly, because it’s Dane. I can feel the rough press of my zipper against my growing arousal as snippets of scenes come to mind. I’ve learned by now it’s not even worth trying to plan a cohesive scene ahead of time for him—Dane is simply too unpredictable. My best bet is to go in with a general goal, pay careful attention to his cues, and adapt myself to his needs.

It hits me as I iron my button-down shirts and arrange my underwear in neat rows in the dresser: the last time I slept in a hotel was the night I met Dane. The boy’s face haunted my rocky, unproductive churning that night. Only three short weeks later, I’ll have him in bed with me for the first time.

In fact, I only have a couple hours before our appointed meeting time. In need of dinner for myself and some late-night fuel for Dane’s hard-working body, I set off away from Times Square. It’s odd to be just a few blocks away from him, to know he’s dancing right now and not be able to see him. I can’t help but wonder if he’s a tiny bit distracted by my proximity and our plans to spend the night together. I wouldn’t jeopardize Dane’s career for anything, especially now that he seems to finally be getting some traction.

A large, greedy part of me wants to attribute some of his success to the progress we’ve made together and the confidence and joy he’s able to express more freely. I’ve seen it before—the metamorphosis that happens when the perfect key unlocks a submissive’s true purpose—but never quite as dramatically as what I’ve seen with Dane. I’ll allow for the possibility that I’m experiencing the mirror image myself, and my perceptions are a bit distorted; even so, his transformation has been miraculous.

Whatever the source, my most fervent wish is to continue along this path, to provide Dane with the support and the increasing challenges he needs. Tonight is about acclimating him to our new physical space, to show him that wherever we are, I am Master of his body, mind, and soul.

A promotion for our boy and an executive suite for two! NOW we're talking! I guess Marcus better get himself to that stage door! That was a long chapter, huh?

  4. Yes, thank you for the long chapter and an appetiser for what is to come.

Well done to Dane, I'm sure Marcus CAN take some credit for Dane's starring role, his life is going to change along with Marcus'. I don't know if Marcus has ever been around the showbiz set before but I hope it puts a spring in his step too rather than make him feel more old than he already does, although Dane can always smack him again!!

I'm pleased Marcus made those phone calls and can't wait till he tells his boy.

Picking up on something Anon said above, is Marcus, who is always a Dom, likely to send a smiley face in reply? I hope so too.

  5. I missed the last couple of reviews b/c while I read the chapter on my phone, I didn't feel comfortable bringing up the blog on my work computer to review. (We've never had a nosy IT department, but I didn't want to take any chances...)

So glad things are turning up. Hopefully the heartfail a few chapters ago will turn out to be the lowest point in their relationship.I kind of had an inkling when Dane sat in the audience of Dane's show that there might be a "promotion" in his future. I'm also happy that it is not through the misfortune of one of his castmates ( we don't really care about someone in another show, do we?)? *squeals excitedly* A week at the Fillmore, huh? I can't wait to see how that goes!

    1. I wouldn't get too charged up about the stranger's misfortune that led to Dane's "big break"- hey, why do you think they call it "big break" anyway? Someone else's leg...anyway...

I believe an awful lot of intense realities were shared over the course of this double safe word and talk. I can see them getting back to this level of intensity any time a limit is breached or a button gets pushed, but as they grow together, the trust that builds between them should help soften any blows and make the landing that much softer.

Of course it could be as Marcus thinks - that Dane doesn't have many he can trust - but it was still nice to see he wanted Marcus to know first. Can't wait for their 'executive suite' scene :)

  8. Lovely chapter, as always. I enjoyed seeing how M's relationship with Aro stands today. Clearly respect flows in both directions, and while they aren't exactly friends, there is a certain amount of affection in how they speak to each other, especially when discussing Dane and this Christopher of Aro's.

Love this: "A warm shiver passes through me as I recall the heat of Dane’s body in my lap."

And this: “Understood, boy. We’ll find another solution.” Because I am definitely not keeping a treasure like you locked away behind closed doors. " This idea has always intrigued me in any such relationship- how do you maintain your boundaries in a public setting without forcing the public to witness to your scene. One reason why I loved the whole scene with Marcus in KEA! ;)

I am soo happy for Dane and his promotion. Hope he continues to grow, both with Marcus and in his own life/ career. Balance, and what not, you know?

Can't wait to see what kind of treats M has in store for the executive suite!

  11. Wow, Marcus setting the wheels in motion, this chapter felt like a peek behind the scenes. I really appreciated the way you wrote this chapter and all the details you shared in it. Often in stories things seem to pop out of nowhere and this chapter I felt was the setting up of many events yet to come. I also loved the process that he goes through to prepare for Dane. So sweet how Dane is in his thoughts at all time, I specially loved how he censored himself with the "old" stuff on Dane's behalf.
In my country we have a saying "Prometer no empobrece" which literally translated means: To promise doesn't impoverish. So to say you will do something and to actually do it, are indeed different things. Marcus is doing an excellent job at not falling into that, he is so committed to this relationship and so willing to go the extra mile. I can already see the beginning of the change to that Marcus we got a glimpse of on the prologue.
As for Dane, amazing news he received on this chapter and it's so great that he is so ready to be a lot more on the spotlight. Also I loved that he is more secure in his relationship with Marcus and now he asks and expresses his concerns. He is adorable and I still want to adopt him.
Thank you so much for this chapter and for sharing your writing.

I remember many times while writing this story asking my trusty prereaders whether Marcus was too much inside his head, whether my readers might get bored with hearing his thoughts. He is a very thoughtful guy, and it's an important part of the progression of the story to hear where he is, but I'm so pleased to hear your enjoyment of exactly that. Thank you for letting me know.

Yes, I am curious about Dane's family as well. That Marcus is his first call with good news has to potential to be quite telling. Then, again, Marcus is important to him. He has bonded to him. Their relationship is new so why wouldn't he call him first?

So proud of Dane with his landing that new role. But I think I am, almost, more proud of him for telling Marcus of his need for a huge calorie intake when Marcus picks him up after the show. I feel that is a big step for him to let Marcus know his needs. Perhaps I am blowing that thought out of proportion, IDK.

What is the deal with people who have access to your car always wanting to take your headlights off auto? They should leave your vehicle as they found it. I am not one for valet parking. I think most do not realize that the company is not responsible if the valet damages your vehicle. But I digress.... LOL

  15. As so much of this story has been our two guys (no complaints) it was interesting to hear Marcus interact with a new character. Can't wait for Aro to find this unsuspecting dude. He has no idea what is awaiting him. This is one of the fun things about FF. What is his name? James, Felix. I don't think you used them in KEA, but my memory isn't Danes.

So congrats to Dane. I couldn't help but wonder about two things. 1) How much of this had to do with his performance improving because of his relationship with M and 2) how do I think little d would have reacted to this news. Not well I think.

With regards to a previous reviewer wondering about smiley faces. I had a moment of thinking of Marcus coming up with his own set of emoticons. I got a little silly thinking of what they might be.

    1. I agree, it's fun to put new characters into the mix and see different sides of these guys. I heard another author explain side characters as "prisms through which to view your main characters" and thought that was ever so cool!

In response to your lovely pondering about Dane's performance, I would say he is a new person under Marcus's care, or more accurately, he is the best version of himself. Would he have gotten there otherwise? Maybe, but probably not in time to take advantage of this opportunity. And no, your "little d" would never have shared Dane's pride in his accomplishment. Would have squashed it with his own insecurity.

Oh do tell on the emoticons!

  17. BORN I'M BAAAAAAACK!!!!! not even home from work yet and I'm in. Gah isn't it good to see Dane finally flourish? I often liken him unto a timid caterpillar. But that was before he met Marcus. Not he's a sweet, little butterflyrics Marcus is keeping in his palms, until he's ready to spread his buoyant wings. Its so good to see him so happy. And while Marcus doesn't want toaccept the praise for that. A huge part of it is how he's conditioned Dane to be comfortable and find his place in himself. A true dom cares for his sub before himself. Has Marcus done any less?

'I’ve seen it before—the metamorphosis that happens when the perfect key unlocks a submissive’s true purpose...' LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS!!! Because it adds to what I was saying above. Marcus is the PERFECT key and he's unlocked so much potential in his beautiful boy.

Yessss... I was wondering how long it would take for Marcus to start looking for the masshat! I'd love to see him get dealt with but I hope when Dane finds out, this doesn't scratch at another scab. He's still so tender even though he's come a long way. I'd hate to see him revert and it seems like any and all things where the masshat is concerned are sort of limits.

We'll see how this goes. For now let's enjoy what these two lovebirds have coming.

LOVE the imagery of the caterpillar morphing into a butterfly- all that freedom and beauty always there inside from the start but hidden away in a cocoon. Perfect key for the perfect lock make for happy sub AND dom! Okay, all those thoughts about revenge and such...don't lose that.

  18. i am so happy for dane and marcus is right to take a small slice of credit. dane's beginning to radiate thanks to marcus and it'll show in all aspects of his life.

and i cannot tell you how relieved and happy i am that marcus rang aro!! that piece of shit pissed off the wrong people and when they find him he'll be in a world of trouble! i can just imagine how both dom's will punish him for the way he has treated his subs. can't wait to find out!

    1. I agree and I'd love to see Marcus feeling good about how well Dane is doing out in the world as well as inside the dungeon. Stay tuned...

  19. btw, marcus should've put the fear of god into that valet, he was so rude! who cares if he's driven that car before, you should never mouth back to a customer of any kind. hope he doesn't get a tip. >:(

lol, this is obviously a pet peeve of mine. :)
